Club History
The Early Years
The Woden Wanderers Cricket Club (WWCC) was established in 2000 by a group of Commonwealth Government IT workers who found themselves in Canberra without a Club. After searching for a club to join, it was decided to enter an individual team into the 2000/2001 season of the Canberra City & Suburban Cricket Association (CCSCA) competition, and participated in Fourth Grade.
As the competition expanded, so did the club. The competition itself is now considered the premier hard-wicket competition in Australia outside Sydney, with over 1,200 registered players in the seniors last year. Since the year 2000, the Wanderers have quickly moved up the grades while continuing to expand.
Consolidating the Club
After relying on the goodwill of a friend’s small business in the early years, the Wanderers moved to the Weston Indoor Sports Centre, where the club was based, before forming a partnership with the West Deakin Hellenic Bowling Club in 2005/06 to secure permanent club rooms. In the same year, the club secured a second major sponsor in Compuware, which provided financial assistance for the club to begin providing for its players.
In 2006/07, the club fielded four competitive teams including the premier grade. The 2007/08 season saw two of our four teams compete in the final series again, with both First Grade and Third Grade making the Grand Final. The lower grades, whilst not breaking into the finals showed they were able to compete with the best in their respective grades.
Success – Back-to-Back First Grade Premierships
The 2007/08 season saw the Wanderers claim their maiden premiership, in the First Grade competition. The Third Grade team were strong contenders in the 2006/07 & 2007/08 Grand Finals, and will continue to challenge for the premiership in coming seasons.
In the 2008/09 season, the Woden Wanderers successfully defended their premiership in the First Grade competition and its Fourth Grade side also competed in the Grand Final, showing the depth of talent and dedication through the whole club.
